Terry and David have built a camp shower with its own grey water processing system feeding an evaporative cooler.
In 2008,we made an informative display to show fellow Burners how the system works.
Here’s the basic idea.

The system contains the following components.

The first stage is flocculation. This involves the use of a marvelous substance called aluminum sulfate.

Next, the water is fed into a sand filter (minus the coagulated scum) and the greasy stuff is removed by the sand.

After tthe sand filter, the water is treated with chlorine to kill nasty little bugs like the one shown below.

But wait! There’s more! The water is now full of dead bugs. Who wants to breathe their carcasses? I don’t. So the water passes through a carbon filter to remove the small particulate matter.

We’re almost done.. The last step is to kill any remaining tiny bugs wuth a short-wave ultraviolet,or UVB,lamp. This requires the use of electricity.

Now that we have clean water,we can use it to cool our bodies. This is the evaporative cooler,a common fixture in the dry Southwestern states.

Are you feeling all cool and refreshed now?
