Camping Kitchen

For 2010 I thought I’d build a camping kitchen. I wanted someting that would offer enough counter space to cook and do dishes for a small group. Though this set up wouldn’t be able to handle the dishes for a group as large as ours it would probably be fine for 4-5 people and it would be quite luxurious for two. It is made almost entirely from dumpster-dived or recycled/repurposed materials. The exceptions being some of the screws,a hinge.

Here is the kitchen in it’s traveling compact form. The box is mostly made from cardboard impregnated with epoxy resin. The plywood counters and front are recycled from last years art project, the Time Travel Booth.

The Front of the box comes off. The metal bars on the front are legs.

Legs fold down and lock into place using some button clips scavenged from some aluminum crutches.

The legs are made from salvaged Korean-war,steel,tent poles which are welded together.

The legs are loosened from their retaining clips and the front folds.

The Front then slides into a slot and forms a lower shelf and a supporting side.

The top folds over and becomes a second counter. This set up is quite sturdy and will support my weight (160 lbs).

On the left hand side there is a small counter top,a deep drawer to hold cups, bowls and miscellaneous utensils. Below is a shelf for pots and pans.

On the right there is a counter and a big shelf.

In the middle is an area to hold a stove, below that on drawer pulls is a shelf that is intended to hold a wash tub. So when you’re not using it you can push it out of the way. I plan to add a little hand pump on the stove shelf just above the sink area.

Here’s a totally fake action shot.

And ANOTHER!

Hopefully this will be a usefull addition to our camp and a good place to store camping cooking gear when not in use.
